Breastfeeding crisis what is it and why does it happen?

On July 19, 2019 by LillaMayath

What is the breastfeeding crisis and why?

Breastfeeding has benefits for the mother because it helps to recover the form more quickly after childbirth since the body uses more energy to produce breast milk. In addition, breastfeeding also helps the mother and baby be physically and emotionally close. However, and although breastfeeding is a natural process, it can also be complicated.

It is important to get comfortable enough before breastfeeding, place the baby well and also make sure that it turns on properly before breastfeeding since the future mom can get irritated nipples. To prevent this you can use some intimate hygiene products.

Extracting milk also stimulates milk production and allows one to go out or sleep overnight, while the father can feed his baby. A mother can express her milk at any time after childbirth, although women often wait until breastfeeding stabilizes (at four weeks). To do this, most women use an electric or manual breast pump to squeeze the milk, although it can also be done manually.

And now that the mother has begun to adapt to the complex process of motherhood, you should try to take some time for yourself. Therefore, to cope with interrupted nights and constant needs, one needs to develop skills such as taking a nap.

On many occasions, the mother may also have the feeling of isolation and it may even cost her to know what day she is. For these reasons, breastfeeding problems can often occur and some women may need additional help to overcome some problems.

In addition, all this increases with the crisis of breastfeeding of the baby that can occur throughout its first twelve months of life in which they need many shots, something that for mothers can be exhausting and cause a lot of anguish.

They are called crises or growth spurts because they are really situations in which the baby does not seem to be at all happy with his mother’s milk production. Periods in which the baby sucks more often after a time of stability.

Babies are usually quite regular in the first days of life, so they usually eat and sleep in fairly regular and predictable cycles. However, when the third week of life comes approximately, they usually experience the first demand crisis and their behavior can be somewhat modified because they want to breastfeed continuously (they do not let go of the breast or breast every thirty minutes), they cry desperately if they do not have the breast in the mouth or regurgitate milk in abundant amounts, but wish to continue breastfeeding.

Towards the month and a half of life babies and moms live the second breastfeeding crisis. The baby again needs more volume of milk, increasing the demand and getting more shots because the mother offers her breast more frequently when she begins to alter. He cries in the chest, breast pulling and gets very nervous getting to arch his back and tensing his legs.

But why does this lactation crisis usually occur towards the sixth or seventh month of life? Well, it is believed that it is due to a change in the composition of the milk, whose taste also varies significantly and totally transiently.

Finally, the breastfeeding crisis or also known as “the three-month crisis” that is probably the most delicate and complex because it affects both mom and baby. At this age, the baby usually wakes up much more frequently during the night and claims the breast more often. So that the breast does not suffer so much, it would be good if the mother removed the milk and kept it for later days.

There are, for example, milk conservation pots. But why does it happen at three months? Because it coincides with a more rapid growth period. In addition, at this age, they are also experts in suction. What happens after three months is also that there are great changes in the baby’s brain: the neural connections multiply and a world of sensations opens before them.

Also, the ear and sight will be much more developed. This will undoubtedly cause the baby to be more aware of what is going on around him all day than his mother’s chest. When night comes, your claim will be abysmal. He will cry when breastfeeding and despair. The mother will despair and be distressed. This is another reason why women can end up breastfeeding.

Tips to overcome a breastfeeding crisis or growth outbreak

It is true that, as a general rule, if one pays attention to the baby and puts it to the breast when requested, the crises will be solved in two or three days, except for the breastfeeding crisis or three-month crisis, which, as we saw, it will last a little longer.

However, for many women this ends up becoming a difficult task that is not easy to solve and many times because of fear that your baby is not being properly fed, they end up breastfeeding. Luckily, experts say that following a series of tips you can get to perfectly cope with a breastfeeding crisis :

  • Let the baby suck as long as he wants, without fear. And if he doesn’t want to, don’t force him to suck.
  • Ask your partner or family for help with housework so you can dedicate yourself exclusively to breastfeeding and your baby.
  • Do not offer artificial milk supplements.
  • If you notice that you are often distracted, try to offer your chest in privacy, in dim light and without much noise.
  • And, above all, never doubt your ability to breastfeed .
